Bread, butter, mayonnaise and cheeses are all you need to make a classic grilled cheese sandwich in a pan.
Here are steps to make this crispy and crunchy grilled cheese sandwich using a non-stick pan.
- Spread butter/mayonnaise mix generously on the sliced breads. (2 parts butter to 1 part mayonnaise)
- Preheat your pan on medium heat.
- Cook in non-stick pan for about 2-3 minutes on each side until golden brown.
Mayonnaise lowers the smoking temperature of the butter. This allows the sandwich to sit longer in the pan, the cheese has more time to melt before the butter is burned. With butter alone, you are not going to get the crunchy toasted bread.
Never butter your pan; else the sandwich is going be greasy.
This sandwich is pure unadulterated comfort food and yet simple to prepare, definitely a classic that goes very well with tomato soup. My favorite is pepper jack cheese. Feel free to use any type of cheese you have on hand.
